A home with a humidity level between 30 and 50 per cent is a happy home. As the old adage goes.
If you have too much humidity in your place, you can support the growth of dangerous mold. If you don’t have enough, you can be subjected to health issues, above and beyond dry and cracked skin.
There are some obvious signs to determine where your home sits on the humidity scale. If you’re creating shocks when you touch things or people, your home is too dry. Get a humidifier. If there is condensation on the inside of your windows, your home is too humid. Get a dehumidifier.
If you want to know more precisely what the humidity in your home is up to, you can measure it, with a hygrometer (which sounds like it should be expensive, but there are many options under $20, like Noklead’s).
Then there’s the ice cube test. Put a few ice cubes in a glass of water for five to ten minutes. If there isn’t any condensation on the glass, your home is too dry. If there’s a ton of condensation, your home is too humid.
There’s no perfect humidifier where you can set it and forget it. The two main types of humidifiers are evaporative and ultrasonic. Evaporative machines need a filter (which needs replacing), and ultrasonic humidifiers use distilled water. Many options are also compatible with essential oils, transforming your home into a spa-like environment.
Ultrasonic humidifiers have two ceramic plates that vibrate and that sound energy makes extra-fine water mist. Evaporative humidifiers have fans that speed up the natural process of water evaporation. The fan makes it a noisier experience than its ultrasonic counterpart.
When researching which humidifiers to recommend, we looked at the sound level, energy consumption and ease of use (to set it up, fill it and clean it). We looked deep through customer reviews from many sources (not just Amazon) and combined the top products to create our list of recommendations.
All of these humidifiers are extremely well-reviewed, it’s just a matter of preference. The “best overall” humidifier is evaporative and requires filter changes.
Though ultrasonic machines are quieter and don’t require a filter, they continue misting even if your home has enough humidity. But the “most functions” ultrasonic humidifier below has a gauge and adjusts its midst automatically for a preset humidity level.
